Mary Slessor and Four Children, Old Calabar, late 19th century
Mary Slessor pictured with four young girls. All four children are dressed in western style clothing and the youngest child in the foreground of the picture is holding a knitted doll.; Mary Slessor was a Scottish missionary known for her work in Africa and here she adopted abandoned children, most notably twin babies and the children of slaves. The four children in this image, Janie, Alice, Maggie and Mary travelled to Scotland with Mary on a return visit home as she was afraid to leave them unprotected in Calabar.
